Tread Your Own Cornish Salt Path

International bestseller The Salt Path by Raynor Winn tells the moving true story of a couple who, after losing everything, embark on a transformative journey along England’s rugged South West Coast Path. Recently adapted into a film starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, the story has captured hearts worldwide.

The memoir follows Raynor and her husband Moth as they face extreme adversity—losing their home and livelihood, and confronting Moth’s diagnosis of a terminal illness. With little more than determination, resilience, and their love for each other, they set out to walk the 630-mile coastal path from Somerset to Dorset, including the breathtaking south-east coast of Cornwall.

Their journey includes a memorable stop in our own local area—Falmouth—and a ferry trip to explore the charming village of St Mawes.

Why not turn this inspiring story into your own adventure?

Exploring Falmouth on foot

Falmouth is renowned for its beautiful beaches, and stunning views, and has the world’s third-deepest natural harbour. It offers a perfect base to explore part of the South West Coast Path. Whether you’re inspired to walk a short section or plan a longer hike, you don’t have to tackle it all at once. Take it in stages, soaking up the spectacular coastal landscape, seaside towns and villages, sheltered beaches, and coastal wildlife.

Stay at Glasney Rooms this summer

Located on the scenic Penryn Campus, Glasney Rooms provides comfortable, budget-friendly accommodation in July and August with excellent transport links. Just a short walk from Penryn train station and with on-site bus stops, it’s easy to leave the car behind and explore the local area sustainably.

From Glasney Rooms to Falmouth:

  • Take the Penryn train to Falmouth and discover its rich maritime heritage, vibrant culture, and waterside charm. As Raynor and Moth did, wander through local shops, bakeries, and restaurants along the bustling harbour.
  • Explore Pendennis Point, home to the impressive Pendennis Castle built by Henry VIII in 1540. Follow the coastal path around the Point to discover hidden gems like Little Dennis fort, Castle Beach, Tunnel Beach, and the sweeping sands of Gyllyngvase.
  • Walk a little further to the tranquil Swanpool Beach, perfect for a coastal picnic or wildlife spotting.
  • The next day, pick up where you left off and continue the scenic route to the beautiful sandy cove of Maenporth Beach.

More Walks Nearby:

  • Take the bus to the beautiful Helford Estuary, inspiration for Daphne du Maurier’s Frenchman’s Creek. From here, you can walk all the way back to Falmouth along the coastal path.
  • Or, as in The Salt Path, hop on the Fal River foot ferry to the picturesque village of St Mawes and exploring the Roseland Peninsula.
