Five ways to Wellbeing in Cornwall

So you need a breather from the rat race, or a welcome, and affordable change of scene from the general pressures and routine of life? Or perhaps you’ve just finished your studies and need a break, or just need to find your mojo again.

Think of Cornwall – with those long beaches, rock pools, rugged cliffs, the smell of the fresh salty air, festivals, pubs and quaint coastal towns to visit. If you’ve never been before, or have positive memories from childhood and hanker to see and hear these happy sights and sounds again, visiting Cornwall can rejuvenate your wellbeing and zest for life.

The NHS recommends 5 steps we can all take to improve our mental wellbeing to feel happier and more positive and able to get the most out of life:

  1. Connect
  2. Be Active
  3. Take Notice
  4. Keep Learning
  5. Give

You can follow these steps with a stay in our affordable Cornwall Glasney Rooms or Flats in the peak of summer to help boost your journey to happiness.

1. Connect:

A change of scene will make yourself feel better, think better, perform better and connect better.

In Cornwall, reconnect with your family or friends by spending precious time with them and seek out fun. You’ll lose track of time by participating in absorbing activities that engage you.

There is a plethora of things to do! Soak up Cornish culture during Falmouth week; see superyachts and smaller sailing boats race, and experience nightlife with a packed programme of evening entertainment. Along with a variety of daytime events including a carnival and an amazing air show; there will be an incredible buzz around our beautiful town.

2. Be Active:

To ensure you are refreshed for your day’s activities, our on-campus Stannary is modern, stylish and well equipped to enjoy a hearty breakfast or delicious lunch. Our contemporary Koofi Café serves divine pizzas, good Starbucks coffee and tasty sweets which melt in your mouth. The Green Beast Smoothie from our Koofi Café is a must try to detox and energise! Packed full of broccoli, pineapple, banana, mango, celery and spinach, have one of these and you’ll be ready for anything.

On campus there’s a fantastic large, state-of-the-art, pay-as-you-go Sports Centre, badminton court, gym, and a variety of exercise classes to keep fit and have fun. Whether you’re a self-motivator or a fitness-phobe, we have flexible entry packages designed to cater to all degrees of commitment. Why not treat yourself to personal one-to-one training and a health MOT?

There are a range of fitness classes (subject to demand) in the Sports Centre such as:

  • Yoga
  • Barbell & Weights
  • Bodypump
  • Bodycombat
  • Spinfit
  • Pilates
  • Box Fit
  • Ab Fab

Ideally located to explore Cornwall

The Penryn Campus is ideally located to explore the quaint coastal towns and beaches all around Cornwall.

Fancy a bike ride? It’s possible to hire a bike in Penryn or at the nearby Bissoe Trail (on the way to Truro). If you bring your own bike, there are bike shelters and a bus stop on campus. With Penryn train station nearby as well, you don’t need to drive to get around!

3. Take Notice:

Best things in life are free!

Our gym is superb, and to complement this, there are many other things you can do to be active as well and support your wellbeing. Simply getting outdoors, being in a different environment, observing and interacting with nature and walking in the fresh air will invigorate you.

When you visit, walk around the stunning campus grounds, notice and savour the moment, feel engaged in the stunning natural beauty of Cornwall.

The natural environment of the campus and nearby Falmouth beaches will provide refreshing restorative qualities. A swim in the sea is a well-known tonic to boost wellbeing as well. Local cold water sea swimmers often fondly describe a dip in the Atlantic as their ‘vitamin sea.’

4. Keep Learning:

Settle down and read books (there is an academic library on campus which welcomes visitors). Find out more about the local history including Pendennis Castle in Falmouth and enjoy a boat trip over to its sister St Mawes Castle. The Maritime Museum in Falmouth is definitely worth a visit with a special Titanic Stories exhibition now on.

The Eden Project, an educational charity in St Austell, includes massive Biomes housing the largest rainforest in captivity and has stunning plants, exhibitions and stories and exciting family events.

Our AMATA performance centre, Trebah Gardens Amphitheatre and the Minack Theatre host a varied cultural programme of theatre, music and comedy.

Try something new, take a paddleboarding, surfing or kayaking lesson available at nearby activity centres located on Swanpool or Gyllyngvase beaches to develop new skills and your confidence, taking your wellbeing to the next level.

5. Give:

Say thank you. Take a moment to appreciate people who have added value to your experience whether it’s thanking your taxi driver, waiter or a kind word to our Glasney Lodge reception team. You’ll cheer them up and will feel better too.

If you’re able to support any local lifesaving charities, there is – RNLI Lifeboats, and the Cornwall Air Ambulance for starters. Do visit the lovely Flicka Foundation – donkey sanctuary charity on your stay with us too. They are located nearby and it’s free to get in.

Try a beach clean. Challenge yourself to put five pieces of rubbish in the recycling bins on campus and in the local community.

Make the most of the healing tonic of Mother Nature and stay with us at the beautiful and unique Penryn Campus. In August it is very quiet and tranquil here. The rooms, which are student accommodation for most of the year, are comfy, basic and practical, and nestled within a leafy, expanse of resplendent mature gardens making this a tranquil break away. Give your wellbeing what it deserves.

Don’t wait.
